How to build a healthy body... and a healthy wallet

Here are seven easy tips (that anyone can do) in order to loose weight and feel better about yourself.

1)  Understand how grocery stores are designed and why.

They're a business and the things that they do entice you to buy more.  It's psychological.  The better stores have layouts based upon scientific research.  They are designed to channel you in certain directions, make you stay longer and leave with more groceries.

There's an old saying, "Never go to a grocery store when you're hungry."  It's easy to forget, though.  Make it a habit to remember that quote.  Go in with a plan (i.e. a list) and come out with those items only.  Many grocery stores have the bakery and/or deli near the front, so that the aroma of cooking makes you hungry.  Always have a snack before going to the grocery store!

2)  Avoid skipping meals, especially breakfast.

Skipping meals puts your body out of whack and makes your blood-sugar levels uneven.  Don’t put them on a roller coaster by skipping meals or your body will go into fat-storage mode.  It might sounds strange, but it's true - skipping meals can actually cause you to gain weight!

You can, however, have a meal-replacement.  Naturally, we highly recommend Shakeology - which is great in the morning when a lot of us are short on time.

3)  Don't deprive yourself of the things you love.

If you don’t let yourself have the things you love once in awhile, you’ll crash and eat ten times more of it than you would have if you had smaller amounts now and then.  Even worse, you'll stress out - and that affects your motivation to exercise and can even cause health problems.

If pursuing a healthier lifestyle stresses you out, then you're doing it wrong.

If you love chocolate, have a piece once in awhile.  It doesn’t mean you have to eat an entire chocolate bar every day.

4)  Fiber is your friend.

Your body has to work harder to break down fiber (versus processed foods) and that helps you lose weight. Fiber will also make you feel full faster.  That's important.  Fiber also helps lower your cholesterol, lower your risk of heart disease and maintain colon health.

Try to keep the peels on your fruits and vegetables if you can. You should (more or less) be consuming at least 20-35 grams of fiber a day, and is doesn't have to come from carbohydrates.  I strongly believe that everybody should be using Metamucil, by the way.

5)  Get Your Fluids!

You have to stay hydrated at all times.  Dehydration is the #1 cause of ageing and a host of other health issues.  I always keep a big glass of water near my bed so I can drink it as soon as I wake up, to rehydrate and also boost my metabolism.  Drinking a glass of water before a meal will also make you feel fuller faster.

And you know what?  A lot of people confuse thirst for hunger.  Drink clean water throughout the day and eat as much water-rich food as you can, when you can.

6)  Eat until you are satisfied, but don't eat fast.

When you slam down food in a hurry, you'll often eat more (sometimes a lot more) then if you ate more slowly.  Also, if you 'count caleries' too much, it'll just stress you out - and feeling hungry all the time is no good either.  So the best thing to do is sloooooow down at meal time.  It has to become a habit.
Again, your body will go into fat-storage mode if it believes not enough food is coming its way.

The human brain is wired that way.  It's your survival instinct.

7)  Light exercise is fine, so long as you do it regularly.

I saved this one for last, because it's probably the most important one of all.  Daily exercise has simply GOT to be a habit.  It's hard at first, but it gets easier when you start doing it every day.  I recommend the morning time - immediately after waking.  Have some water, some juice, a Shakeology shake or whatever you like... and then get started.

Walking is just fine, but it needs to be for at least 30 minutes and it needs to be every, single day.

Oh, I almost forgot about the 'healthy wallet' part! Your financial health is important too, right?
